THE FIGHTING MEN OF OKLAHOMA was published in 1948 by the Victory Publishing Company of Oklahoma City. The theme of the series was “A Remembrance, An Appreciation, A Memorial.” Six volumes were planned, but for some reason, only two were completed. Volume one is a history of the Second World War. In the back of this first volume were pages dedicated for the owner’s military records, notes, stories, names and address of friends, autographs, etc.; much like a school yearbook might be. The second volume is filled with photos and short biographies of the men and women who served in the U.S. Military who were from Oklahoma. Apparently, the information of the featured men and women was sent to the publishers by their families who later had to purchase the volumes if they wanted them. These extracted names and photos are of persons who had an Atoka County connection. Photos can be found at bottom of this page. They were unfortunately, very small in the publication.

Wilbern S. Beard, 20828011, S/Sgt. Inf. USA, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther C. Beard and husband of Mrs. Lois Eslick Beard of Atoka, Okla., was born Mar. 23, 1915, at Caddo and attended Bokchito High School. He was inducted into the service at Ft. Sill, Sept. 16, 1940 and trained with the 45th Div. Sgt. Beard served overseas in the EAME Theater of War with the 45th Div., 180th Inf., Co. B. as supply sergeant, participating in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno and Anzio. He was killed Sept. 21, 1943, at Anzio beachhead. (Decorations: Purple Heart)

Willie J. Bowman, 0-1295329, Capt. Inf. USA, husband of Mrs. Winnie Beard Bowman of Atoka, Okla., was born July 2, 1915 at Caddo, and graduated from Atoka H.S. He entered service at Ft. Sill, Okla., Sept. 16, 1940, and trained with the 45th Div., 180th Inf. Co. B. at Ft. Sill, Camp Barkeley, Tex., Ft. Devens, Mass., Camp Shelby, Miss., and Camp Pickett, Va. Capt. Bowman served 21 months in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater with the squad, participating in the battles of New Guinea, Morotai and Mindanao. He was released from active duty Dec. 19, 1945. Jake L. Castor, 38711955, T/5 FA USA, son of Mrs. Mary Mason of Stringtown, Okla., was born April 19, 1926 at Chockie and attended Kiowa H.S. He entered Service at Ft. Sill June 23, 1944, and trained at Roberts, Cal., and at Ft. Hood, Tex. T/5 Castor, served overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of war with the 749th FA Bn, M Btry. Mike Castor, Jr., 885-21-60, S1/c USNR, son of Mrs. Mary Mason of Stringtown, Okla., was born Feb. 23, 1923 at Chockie and attended Kiowa HS. He entered service at Tulsa, Jan. 10, 1944 and trained at San Diego, Cal. S1/c Castor served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of War with navy #152 and #3960. David W. Chappel, 670-02-85, CPO USN, son of Mrs. Fannie Durbin Chappel of Atoka, Okla., was born Dec. 31, 1912 at Atoka and attended Atoka H.S. and Oklahoma Univ. He entered service at Oklahoma City, Dec. 16, 1941 and trained at San Diego, Cal. CPO Chappel served overseas in the European and Pacific Theaters of War Aboard the USS Eagle, (AM-132), USS Captor, (PYC-40), and YMS-403 and participated in the invasion of North Africa. He took part in anti-submarine operations off Iceland and in mine-sweeping operations off Leyte, Okinawa and Japan. He received his discharge Oct. 25, 1945. J.D. Clark, 20828025, Sgt. USA, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Clark of Atoka, Okla. was born Feb. 6, 1915, at Kenefick and attended Atoka HS. He entered service at Atoka Sept. 16, 1940 and trained at Ft. Sill, Camp Barkeley, Ft. Devens, Pine Camp and Camp Pickett. Sgt. Clark served in the States 33 months and overseas 18 months in the EAME Theater of War with the 45th Div., participating in the battles of Sicily and Italy. He received his discharge May 26, 1944. COLE
Ernest S. Cole, 0-471887, Capt. USA, son of Mrs. E.E. Cole of Atoka, Okla., was born Jan. 12, 1909, at Boggy Depot and attended Atoka H.S., Oklahoma University, and Tulane University. He enlisted in the service at Dallas, Tex., in 1941 and trained at Camp Sutton, Camp Polk, and Camp Pickett. Capt. Cole served in the States 10 months and in the EAME Theater of War 20 months with Co. I, 302nd Ord. Regt., 3rd Bn. Hq. He died Oct 27, 1943 of yellow jaundice in French Morocco and is buried in the American section of a French Cemetery.

William W. Cotton, Captain USA, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Cotton and husband of Norene A. Cotton of Atoka, Oklahoma, was born February 5, 1907 and attended Poteau H.S., N.W. State Teachers College, Alva, and graduated from O.U. School of Medicine. He entered the service February 19, 1942, and served in the United States Army Medical Corps.

Carl F. Crane, 18003483 T/5, USA, Lawton, Okla., was born Dec. 12, 1915 at Holdenville, Okla. He attended Atoka H.S. and was inducted into service Sept. 26, 1940, at Oklahoma City, receiving his military training at D.E.M.L., Ft. Sill, Military Police. Cpl. Crane also served with the 734th Ry Opr. Br. Camp Plauche, La., and Van Buren, Ark. He served 9 months overseas in the European Theater of War, participating in the battles of Central Europe, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes Forest. He was discharged from the service Sept. 5, 1945. He entered service at Oklahoma City, Mar 26, 1942, and trained at Norfolk, Va. MM2/c Hall served in the States at Davisville, R.I., Gulfport, Miss., Treasure Island, Cal., and Santa Cruz, Cal. and overseas 18 months in the Pacific Theater of War with the 14th Naval Const. Bn., participating in the battle of Guadalcanal. He received his discharge Sept. 3, 1945.

Harold J. Hedges, 0-339652, Capt. USA, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Hedges of Burbank Okla. and husband of Mrs. Juanita Green Hedges of Atoka, was born Aug. 19, 1914 at Kaw City and attended Burbank H.S. and O.U. He entered service at Ft. Sill, Aug. 28, 1941 and trained at Ft. Sill, Camp Maxey, Camp Gruber and Camp Shelby. Capt. Hedges served in the U.S. 40 months and overseas 14 months in the EAME Theater of War with the 516th Field Arty. Bn., 9th Army, participating in the battles of the Rhineland and Central Europe. He served as Field Artillery Unit Commander of 4-155 MM Gun (Long Tom) and taught personnel in the use of artillery weapons. Capt. Hedges received his discharge Feb. 17, 1946. He entered service at Atoka, Feb. 4, 1942, and trained at Camp Wolters and Ft. Sam Houston, Tex. Pfc. Shields served overseas 14 months in the European Theater of Operations with Co., C, 9th Inf., in France, Germany, Belgium and Ireland. He was wounded July 27, 1944 and was killed in action Dec. 15, 1944.

Delbert B. White, 38468031, Pfc. AAA USA, son of Mrs. Lizzie Waller of Caney, Okla., was born April 24, 1924 at Atoka and attended Caney H.S. He entered the service Mar. 23, 1943 at Tulsa and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with the 673rd AA Machine Gun Btry., 1st Cav. Div., 28 months. Pfc. White participated in the campaigns of the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Southern Philippines and in the invasion of the Admiralties. He was a heavy machine gunner and was discharged Dec. 30, 1930. Thomas A. White, S1/c USN, son of Mrs. Lizzie C. Waller of Caney, Okla., was born Jan. 28, 1922 at Caddo and attended Caney H.S. He entered the service Jan. 27, 1942, at Ardmore, Okla., and trained at San Diego. S1/c White served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of War aboard the US Submarine Argonaut. He was lost in action Jan. 10, 1943 when the Argonaut was sunk off the coast of Rabaul, New Britain. (Decorations: Purple Heart, Submarine Battle Pin w/1 Star.)
WINTERS
Richard L. Winters, 18195756, Sgt., Med. Corps USA, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion P.Winters of Stringtown, Okla., was born Nov. 10, 1926 at McAlester and attended Stringtown H.S. and Oklahoma A & M. He entered service at Camp Chaffee, Ark., Dec. 19, 1944 and trained at Camp Hood, Tex. Sgt. Winters served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with the 24th Med. Bn., Co. D, and is now stationed at Kocki, Shikoku, Japan. (Decorations: Combat Inf. Badge, Army of Occupation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal.)
